Dr. Ong Kian Ming was a recipient of the prestigious ASEAN scholarship from the Singapore government from 1991 to 1994. He studied at Raffles Institution (O levels) and Raffles Junior College (A Levels) during this period of time.
Dr. Ong holds a BSc (with First Class Honors) in Economics from the London School of Economics as well as an MPhil in Economics from University of Cambridge.
He was a summer intern at the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) in 1998 when the Malaysian government introduced currency controls amidst the Asian economic crisis.
Dr. Ong was based at the Kuala Lumpur office of the The Boston Consulting Group from 1999 to 2001 where he accumulated valuable case experience in the financial services and consumer goods industries in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia.
He then worked for two politically linked think tanks as a policy analyst, firstly with the Institute of Strategic Analysis and Policy Research (INSAP) for 1 ½ years and then for the Socio-economic Development and Research (SEDAR) Institute for another 1 ½ years.
He recently completed his PhD in political science at Duke University where he was a Fulbright scholar. His thesis examined the emergence, maintenance and breakdown of dominant party authoritarian regimes – non-democratic regimes which have won (and continue to win) less than free and fair elections for an extended period of time.
He is now attached to the Faculty of Economics and Policy Science (FEPS) at UCSI University, where he is an integral part of a small and growing team that is currently tasked with designing and rolling out a Masters in Public Policy (MPP) program.
Dr. Ong strongly believes that he can utilize his diverse education and corporate background and knowledge to hone the strategic skills and thinking of business leaders with the ultimate aim of helping these leaders grow their respective businesses and make positive contributions to society.
